Frequently Asked Questions

Broadband Wherever have been supplying Satellite Broadband solutions throughout the UK & Europe now for many years, and are also one of the only officially recognised trainers for satellite broadband systems both for installers and resellers.

Can I install it myself?

Installation is possible if you have a good degree of DIY skills; however the dish alignment is critical, and needs to be more precise than a TV aerial or Sky dish. As such a misalignment of the antenna can affect the throughput speeds. We always recommend installation is carried out by one of our fully trained installers because of this.

How fast is Satellite Broadband?

A maximum rate of 22Mb download speed and 6Mb upload speed are available. The speed of the service ultimately depends on other factors such as how many users are on the network. This means you may not see the full headline speed during peak times.

Understanding Congestion & Speeds

There are a number of variables that influence the download and upload speeds you receive. Some of these factors are: Time of day (peak/off-peak); The number of people on the network - Congestion; The amount of data you have consumed.

What is Congestion?

As the number of people that are using the network, at any given time increases, the speeds may reduce. If you think of broadband as a tunnel, it works the same as traffic moving through it. The more people accessing it; the slower it goes. Due to this you may find that during peak times your download speeds are slightly less than usual. This typically woudl be down to congestion on the network. This is something all internet providers have to account for.

Are there requirements for the installation of satellite broadband?

The satellite dish needs a clear line of sight to the southern facing sky. The exact angle is 9 degrees east of south and pointing up approximately 30 degrees from the horizontal. The modem requires a power supply.

Do I need a telephone line?

Our service does not require the use of a telephone line.

Are there any minimum requirements for computers?

A network card is required.
The satellite system can connect to any PC, MAC, or laptop providing there is a network card installed.

Can I use wireless at home with Broadband Wherever?

You can integrate a wireless router of your choosing with the satellite broadband system. The router does need to be an Ethernet Router for connection to the satellite modem. An ADSL router will not provide the right connection to the satellite.

Can I watch Television with Satellite Broadband?

Yes, with additional equipment.
The system is designed for data transfer, and does not include TV reception. In some instance the addition of an extra clamp and LNB, which can be aligned to another satellite will enable you to receive TV.

What networking equipment is compatible with satellite?

Most third-party networking equipment is compatible with the satellite modem; however there are a few omissions:
• ADSL routers are known not to work with the satellite connection
• DrayTek routers have incompatibility issues, and at this time we do not recommend them to be used with the Tooway system
• Any networking device that does not support DHCP will not work.
The Tooway modem relies on DHCP to be issued at all times We sell two types of routers. One will be a normal wireless N router. The other is a dual-WAN, load balancing wired router for customers with more advanced networking needs. These routers are both guaranteed to work under warranty through the system. Please contact us for more details.

Can I use BBC iPlayer services with Satellite Broadband?

Satellite Broadband services supplied by us do support BBC iPlayer services, providing you are based in the UK. For European accounts you will not be able to access iPlayer services, but will be issued with an IP address relevant to the country you are in.

Is Satellite Broadband suitable for online gaming?

Not for “real-time” games.
Turn based games may work. To answer this question, it depends on what game you are playing. Games such as chess or other turn-based games where a reaction time is not essential will work. For action games where reaction time is critical then satellite broadband service is not suitable due to the higher ping times of approximately 600ms.

Do you offer email services?

Experience has shown most customers already have their own email address which they would like to keep. Our service supports all web based mail services such as Hotmail, Gmail, and MSN etc.

Do you offer an outgoing mail server?

In some instances, if you have an alternative email address, we have found some hosting companies or email providers will not allow you to send email through their network if you are using a satellite based service. In this case we have our own dedicated SMTP server, which we can give you access to, to enable you to send emails. We do not provide or recommend third parties services for this function.

Can I use VoIP with Satellite broadband?

VoIP services such as Skype already work with satellite broadband. We will also soon be introducing a dedicated VoIP service which will allow our customers to use the internet connection to make regular telephone calls.

How do I know if Satellite Broadband is for me?

If you live in a “Not Spot” or “Slow Spot” area and your only means of accessing the internet is dial-up, or you have a poor ADSL connection then satellite broadband is the ideal solution. As the service does not depend on telephone lines and is not geographically dependant, it offers a high speed always-on connection where ever you are.

How much does it cost?

The new services offer fast satellite broadband for less than £1.00/day depending on your chosen service level.

Are there any limits on how much data I can download?

Depending on your service level, which will give you a data threshold, all of the Satellite Broadband services are subject to a Fair Access Policy (FAP).

What is a Fair Access Policy?

The idea of the Fair Access Policy is to maintain quality of service for all customers on the network. Each service level is given a data allowance for a 1 calendar month period. If you exceed this threshold then you will see a significant reduction in speed across your connection. At this point you can either consider an upgrade of service or the purchase of a ‘volume booster’. A call to the office always helps as we can discuss usage level in more detail, and help you decide on the best way forward.

Can I check my own data usage?

Once you become a customer, you will be given your own dedicated customer portal with a username and password. In this portal you can access your own data charts which will show you how much data you have used within your data cycle.

Why Choose Broadband Wherever.

Let’s be honest, there are several providers offering similar or the same service from Tooway™. Many of them will tell you they are the biggest; they have installed the most, and they are the leading company in the UK & Europe. So who do you choose? Good question; here are some key reasons to make us your preferred supplier:
• We will always be honest and tell you exactly how the service works, not give misleading information to “beef up” the product-- with small print hiding the finer details.
• Dedicated in-house support located in the UK for on-going support if needed using local UK numbers. Not a call centre.
• We only use our own in-house trained installers; we do not subcontract out installations or leave you to find your own installer. This way we can guarantee the quality of installations without using this as a get out clause.
• Most importantly of all we recognise how important you, the customer are!

Why does a ping give a slow response over Satellite?

The satellite is based in a geostationary orbit approximately 36,000Km above the Equator. A command of this type does have a distance to cover and as such, you will normally see a ping time of around 600ms. Secondly, a ping command is also considered low priority by networks. All other applications will be processed first. As there is no acceleration applied to the ping command, this can sometimes cause increased ping times or even a time out. Ping is therefore not a reliable test for connectivity or speed.

How big is the dish?

The new dish being used for the KA-Service is expected to be around 76cm. This is a reduction in size of the larger 1m dish used for the Ku-band service.

How stable is Satellite broadband in bad weather?

Satellite services as with all types of RF transmission are affected by weather conditions. The aim here is to ensure that you, the customer, do not notice the effect of the weather on the signal. The newer system uses a technology called Adaptive Coding & Modulation (ACM) which enables the system to automatically react to the effects of rain fade. This gives the Satellite network higher reliability in adverse weather and limits the noticeable effect on the QoS.

Are the IP addresses Routable?

The “Home User” services are supplied with non-routable IP address.
If you are looking to set up a remote log-in to view CCTV cameras or for home workers to log into your office server then you will require our ‘Business’ services.

What is Latency?

Latency is the term used for the time lapse in your request, and for that request to reach the server. For satellite connections latency is around 600ms. This means certain applications such as on line gaming and VPN connections may not work as well over satellite

Can I run a VPN connection over the Satellite?

There are lots of VPN services and applications available on the market, and as yet we have not been able to test every application. If you are looking to run VPN applications we suggest you call one of our dedicated support team for more information.
